Yesterday I experienced a first. I went to see the 705 showing of Buried AKA Ryan Reynolds buried in a box in Iraq with a cell phone and a zippo for two hours. I was the only one in the theater for the entire film. Considering the film was just released 5 days prior the empty theater bodes ill for it’s box office draw. Luckily I imagine it cost very little to make: it has one on-screen actor and one set small set. While it’s political commentary regarding the Iraq War and DOD contractors was trite I must admit that Reynolds does a fine job and the Kafka-lite battles against bureaucracy and the inconveniences of mobile-phone culture keep the film almost constantly entertaining. Reynolds perhaps even transcends his pretty-boy image and demonstrates that his talents, even if they’re just comedic, extend beyond his square jaw and six pack “situation.” Not exactly recommended but not a waste of time either. Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5.
